Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Soildrops Soil Moisture Sensor do?

It measures real-time soil moisture in each irrigation zone and sends the readings wirelessly to your SoilDrops Controller. With sensors paired, the controller can water from measured soil moisture instead of a forecast guess.

How accurate is the sensor?

±3% volumetric water content under normal conditions — accurate enough for residential irrigation decisions. It's calibrated for typical soil and is most reliable when buried at root depth.

Where should I place the sensor?

In the center of a sprinkler zone, or under a drip emitter at the midpoint of a dripline zone — roughly one-third of the way out from the nearest sprinkler head. Push it into moist soil at root depth (about 3–4 inches for lawn, deeper for shrubs and trees) until it's flush with the soil surface. Avoid zone edges, soggy spots, concrete or rocks, and sloped low points where water pools.

How long does installation take?

About 3 minutes per sensor — no tools required.

Do I need to remove sensors before mowing?

No. They sit flush with or slightly below the soil. If you're scalping or dethatching, mark them with a flag so you don't catch them with a blade.

What's the wireless range?

Up to ~100 ft in open air, and 60–80 ft through a house. If you need more range, the Soildrops Booster doubles signal range to 300+ ft. Place the booster within 50 ft of the sensor.

How long does the battery last?

1–2 years on a single CR2032 coin cell. The app shows a yellow indicator when battery is low and a red one when it's time to replace.

Are the sensors waterproof?

Yes — they're fully waterproof and designed to live in wet soil year-round.

How do I pair a sensor to my controller?

Hold the sensor's button for 5 seconds until the LED blinks. In the app, tap Add Sensor and scan the QR code. A 0% reading right after pairing is normal — accurate readings come in within ~10 minutes.

How do I know my sensor is working?

In the app, a healthy sensor shows a current moisture reading, a green signal indicator, and a healthy battery icon. The moisture % should rise after watering or rain and gradually fall as the soil dries.

How do I reach customer service?

Simple install and very useful data

I am very impressed with the overall simplicity of this device. You take it out of the box, link it to your controller, and shove it straight into the ground without needing any tools at all. It provides continuous, real-time data on how wet the soil actually is. I find myself checking the app frequently just to see the moisture trends. By combining the local weather forecast with the actual ground moisture, it manages to create perfect schedules for my grass. It’s a smart way to conserve water without sacrificing a green lawn.

Flawless integration with the controller

This integrates flawlessly with the 8-zone smart controller. I placed it in a notoriously dry part of my lawn. Now, the system uses that exact data to create schedules that keep that specific area green. Very easy installation without any digging or wiring required.

Low profile and mower safe

It sits low enough that my mower safely passes right over it without any issues. It really takes the guesswork out of my watering routine.

Sits completely flush with grass

The sensor paired quickly to the hub and sits completely flush with the grass. The soil readings have been highly accurate for me.

Easy setup and totally mower friendly

Getting this moisture sensor hooked up to my main 8-zone controller was incredibly straightforward. I literally just pushed it right into the soil in the front yard where the sun hits the hardest. It's really interesting to watch the real-time moisture data update on the app. The best part is how the system uses this information to create watering schedules automatically, rather than me just guessing when the grass is thirsty. It sits low enough in the grass that I can run my mower right over it without any fear of clipping it.

I love how they work setup was a bit of a challenge until

Ok I have the full system with the controller and the soil moisture sensors. I am using them for my lawn. I like that I can get details that I can then look at and do a google search to understand them better. I like that when combined with the controller it only waters the zones that need it based upon what i have set the moisture level to and it skips the zones that are above the level that has been set. Connecting them was a bit of a challenge at first until I just went through the whole controller setup and then set them to each zone individually instead of during the setup of the controller. It worked out better so you did not have to redo the setup of zones (all of them) again.

Stops unnecessary watering cycles

This is a very useful add-on for my irrigation setup. It reliably stops my sprinklers from running when the soil is already sufficiently wet.

Good readings but sparse instructions

It gives accurate readings and is entirely wireless. It was easy to push into my garden soil, and the battery life has been solid so far. It definitely helps reduce my water bill by preventing unnecessary watering. I just wish the included instructions had a little more detail on optimal placement.

Mower safe with accurate moisture feedback

The hardware itself is excellent. Pushing it into the lawn was completely effortless, and it sits so low that it’s virtually invisible and totally safe from my mower blades. The moisture feedback is very consistent and seems highly accurate based on the soil feel. It definitely helps the main controller figure out when watering is actually necessary. I docked one star simply because I wish the app provided a slightly longer historical graph of the moisture trends over the season. Functionally, the sensor does exactly what it promises and has reduced my water usage.

Accurate but frustrating initial pairing

The moisture readings seem accurate, and it does communicate well with the main controller to adjust the watering. However, I had a hard time getting it to pair on the first try. It took three attempts before the app finally recognized it. Works fine now, but setup was annoying.

The missing piece for dry patches

This sensor was the missing piece to my home irrigation setup. I’ve struggled with stubborn dry patches near my driveway for years. I popped this wireless sensor into that exact spot, and now my controller knows exactly when that specific zone is thirsty. The fact that it doesn’t require any complicated wiring is fantastic. It just works quietly in the background. The battery still shows as fully charged after several weeks of use. If you own the 8-zone controller, you really need to add at least one of these to get the most out of it.

Handy device with minor range limits

This is a handy device for the yard. Pairing it to the controller was simple, and the battery is holding up great. It provides good moisture feedback to the app. My only issue is that the wireless range struggled slightly through my thick brick walls.

Flush with the grass and safe

I really appreciate that I don't have to worry about hitting this with the lawnmower. It sits perfectly flush with the grass. The soil data is sent directly to the app, helping it create schedules automatically. No more accidentally watering while the ground is still wet.

Solved my sandy soil watering issues

My yard has notoriously sandy soil that dries out incredibly fast, so a traditional timer never really worked well for my landscaping. Putting this sensor in the ground has taken all the guesswork out of my lawn care routine. The moisture readings match up perfectly when I compare them to my old manual probe. It feeds data back to the SoilDrops controller to help it figure out optimal watering schedules. I've had it out there for a few months now and the battery is still holding steady. Being able to just swap the battery later is a nice touch.

Fixed the overwatering in my backyard

Before getting this, I was constantly overwatering my shaded backyard and turning it into a muddy mess. I placed the sensor right in that problem area to monitor it. Now it reads the exact moisture level, and the system uses that information to create schedules that actually make sense for the shaded grass. I really appreciate that it sits low enough that my lawnmower blades pass right over it safely. It feels well-built and has completely eliminated the need for me to go out and manually check the soil with my finger every other day.

Works flawlessly with the controller

The sensor works flawlessly with my main controller. Having a replaceable battery is a really nice touch. It has been great for my vegetable garden.

Reads fine but fragile in clay

I like the concept of getting real-time moisture data on my phone, and when it works, it’s great. It pairs with the 8-zone controller to help create schedules, which is a neat feature. However, my yard has a lot of heavy clay and rocks. When I tried to push the sensor in, it felt like the plastic might bend or snap if I pushed too hard. I had to pre-dig a pilot hole, which defeated the 'no tools' promise. Once installed, it reads fine, but the physical design could be sturdier for tough soil.

Helpful data but tricky initial pairing

This has been a very helpful tool for managing my vegetable garden's hydration. Putting it in was literally just pushing the stake into the dirt—no wiring or digging required, which was a huge relief for me. Getting real-time data on my phone gives me peace of mind that my beds aren't completely drying out in the afternoon sun. I'm giving it four stars because getting it to pair initially took a couple of frustrating tries. Once it finally connected to the 8-zone controller, it hasn't dropped the signal once and sits flush with the dirt.
